Review of ejabberd instant messaging server

Ejabberd is a high performance instant messaging server. It is an open source product developed and supported by Process-one. ejabberd is based on Jabber and inherits all of Jabber’s advantages. An instant messaging server allows to transfer presence and status information between users connected to servers and support real-time communications between them. ejabberd can be used to build custom instant messaging services or developing enterprise-wise instant messaging platform. The server is a highly scalable and robust Jabber server. Ejabberd server was developed in little-known Erlang programming language.
ejabberd is a fairly new product. Version 1.1.2 has been released last month. Nevertheless, the product is quickly gaining speed in its quest for general recognition. In February 2006, Jabber.org, probably the most famous Jabber server because it was the first Jabber server in operation, has switched to ejabberd.
From a technical point of view, ejabberd is built with XMPP (eXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol), a largely-accepted XML protocol for instant messaging. ejabberd cluster has some valuable characteristics: single domain can be served from a cluster of ejabberd server, it provides fault-tolerance and cluster nodes can be added or removed on the fly, without a need to stop the servers. ejabberd supports a long list of protocols and offers Standard-Jabber transport compliance. ejabberd can be plugged to an existing LDAP directory. The server offers distribution and fault-tolerance and runs on multi-platforms. ejabberd supports secure connections and allows easy internationalisation of instant messaging system.
Process-one also provides a wide range of services including application development and consulting.
